NOTES

  • Some of the files listed above will be in MS Office 2007 format. Office 2007 stores Word, Excel, and Powerpoint files as “zipped” (compressed) XML (Extended Markup Language) files. These files are identified by an “x” added to the previously used “.doc, .xls, .ppt” file extensions. For example, “file.doc” in Office 2003 would be “file.docx” in Office 2007. If you don’t have a version of Office earlier than 2007, then you will need to download and install the MS Office Compatibility Pack.
  • Note also that, since Office 2007 files are in fact zipped files, MS Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) will often change the file extension of a downloaded Office 2007 file from its original “doc, xls, ppt” to “zip.” These files can’t be opened in the correct application without changing the extension back to its original file type. In other words, IE7 may download “file.docx” as “file.zip.” To properly open “file.zip” in MS Word, the file needs to be renamed back to “file.docx.”
  • Many users won’t be able to rename the file extension as indicated above because their computers are configured to hide extensions. To make file extensions visible, users must open Windows Explorer and go to Tools, Folder Options, View, and uncheck the box that says “hide file extensions.”
